Integrating MI Strategy Into CBT

About the Session
This two-hour program will provide an advanced training in motivational interviewing (MI) for clinicians. Using complex clinical examples from CBT cases, we will practice conceptualizing behavior change from within an MI framework as well as role play strategies for incorporating MI into CBT treatment. We will also discuss barriers to implementing motivational interviewing strategies and role play difficult situations that arise around addressing substance use behavior.

Learning Objectives
1. Conceptualize clients’ substance use behavior and explain what motivational interviewing (MI) strategies to incorporate at what stage of treatment.
2. Utilize MI strategies for substance use behaviors and discuss applying strategies within the context of CBT and other evidence-based treatments.
3. Discuss complicated clinical scenarios and how to apply MI interventions to improve client care.
4. Apply research on MI strategies as they are relevant to different intersecting identities and individuals who have experienced marginalization.

About the Trainer
Hollie Granato, Ph.D., ABPP, is a licensed clinical psychologist with over 15 years experience in training people in evidence-based therapies. As an adjunct clinical professor at UT-Austin, Dr. Granato provides supervision and consultation to clinicians on the topic of motivational interviewing and other evidence-based practices.

Synthesis Psychological Consortium (SPC) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. SPC maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
